Level 2 Stage 5 Typing Worksheet – W and O Keys

Welcome to Level 2, Stage 5 of Dance Mat Typing! This free printable worksheet introduces the w and o keys, the two upper-row letters reached by your ring fingers. It is made for children who have already learned the home row plus e, i, r, u, t and y, and are ready to add two more letters with confidence and correct technique.

What you’ll practise

In this stage you learn two new keys on the top row, one for each hand, both typed with the ring (third) fingers. The trick is to stretch up to each letter and then bring your finger straight back to its home key.

  • w is typed with the left ring finger — the same finger that rests on s. Reach up and across to w, then return to s.
  • o is typed with the right ring finger — the same finger that rests on l. Reach up to o, then drop back to l.
  • Keep the other fingers anchored on the home row so your hands do not drift while the ring fingers do the work.
  • This builds on the pointing- and middle-finger reaches from earlier stages and prepares your ring and little fingers for q, p and beyond in Stage 6.

Type each line, then repeat it

Sit with your fingers on the home row and type every line below using the correct fingers. Repeat any line that feels tricky.

  • fdsafgf jkl;jhj ded kik ded kik
  • ftf fgfrftf jhj jhjujyj
  • thirty three sly sisters
  • sws sws sws sws sws
  • asdf frf ded sws
  • what will we wish
  • fgfrftf ded sws jhjujyj kik lol
  • you your yours yourself
  • he throws this yellow welly
  • she thought she saw a tortoise

How to use this printable worksheet

Print the sheet and keep it beside the keyboard so your child can glance at the lines while keeping their eyes off their hands as much as possible. Work through it gently, one row at a time.

  • Sit up straight with feet flat on the floor and wrists relaxed, fingers resting on the home row.
  • Type each line aloud or quietly, using the left ring finger for every w and the right ring finger for every o.
  • Repeat a line two or three times, checking that the correct fingers are reaching and returning home.
  • When the w and o words feel smooth and accurate, move on to the next stage.
