Level 4 Stage 12 Typing Worksheet – Shift Keys & Capitals

Welcome to the final stage of Dance Mat Typing! This free printable worksheet covers the Shift keys at either end of the bottom row, which you use to type capital letters and the question mark. It is perfect for young typists who have learned every letter and now want to write proper names, sentences and questions with confidence and correct finger habits.

What you’ll practise

By Stage 12 your hands already know every letter, number and the common punctuation marks. Now you add the two Shift keys, which let you reach capitals without ever leaving the home row for long.

  • Left Shift key is held by your left little finger to capitalise letters typed with your right hand, such as J, K and L.
  • Right Shift key is held by your right little finger to capitalise letters typed with your left hand, such as F, D and C.
  • The left Shift also makes the question mark ? when held with the right little finger on the same key as the full stop.
  • The technique cue: hold Shift down, tap the letter, then release — opposite hands work together, just as you learned for reaching keys in earlier stages.

Type each line, then repeat it

Sit with your fingers on the home row and type every line below using the correct fingers. Repeat any line that feels tricky.

How to use this printable worksheet

Print the sheet and sit comfortably with feet flat, back straight and both wrists floating above the keys. Work through it line by line.

  • Rest all eight fingers lightly on the home row before you begin.
  • Type each line aloud, holding Shift with the opposite little finger to the letter you are capitalising.
  • Repeat every line two or three times, watching that your little fingers reach Shift while your other fingers stay in place.
  • Practise the names and sentences, such as James, Kate and Lesley, to feel real capitals in use.
  • Move on only when capitals and the question mark feel smooth — then celebrate, because you have finished all twelve stages!
